Sclerotherapy is a method for treating spider veins and small varicose veins. This technique uses an FDA-approved medicine called Asclera™ (polidocanol) that is injected into the vein using a fine needle. The solution irritates the vessel’s lining causing it to inflame and harden. The body then breaks down the damaged vein, absorbs it, and in most cases, the vein eventually fades away completely. Blood is then circulated through healthy veins located deeper in the body. Appearance and pain associated with the problem may be significantly reduced.
